The Red squad hit three homers in Sunday’s game one win
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech baseball team opened the 2017 Red vs. Black Series with an 11-run outburst, as the Red squad began the five-game set with a 9-2 victory on Sunday afternoon at Rip Griffin Park.
Â
Four members of the Red team recorded multi-hit performances, including senior Zach Rheams and freshman Braxton Fulford, who both had two RBI in the series opener. Rheams and Fulford also made up two of three student-athletes with homers for the Red squad, joining senior Michael Davis with hits that left the park.
Â
Sophomore right-handed pitcher Jake McDonald picked up the win after tossing 3.1 frames of three-hit ball, allowing just one run while striking out two. The Red team's bullpen combined for 5.2 innings of work, giving up just one run and two walks, along with five strikeouts.
Â
The Black team got on the board first on Sunday, as sophomore Grant Little launched a solo homer over the left field wall for the early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. It would be the first of a game-high three hits for Little, who came a triple shy of the cycle after a sixth-inning RBI double and an eighth inning single.
Â
Davis opened the second inning with a game-tying home run and junior Cody Farhat followed with an RBI single, scoring Rheams to give the Red team the lead they would hold for the rest of the day. In the third, three more runs came across home plate thanks to singles from sophomore Clay Koelzer, and freshmen KC Simonich and Fulford.
Â
After a scoreless fourth, the Red squad plated three more runs after the two-run homer from Rheams to left-center field, followed by Fulford's solo dinger over the left field wall to push the advantage to 8-1.
Â
Both teams would get one more in the sixth inning, as junior Cameron Warren shot a double down the left field line to score sophomore Josh Jung, giving the Red squad a 9-1 lead. Back-to-back doubles in the bottom half of the frame from Little and fellow Midland native senior Connor Beck brought the game to 9-2.
Â
The Red squad finished with 12 hits, while the Black team ended the day with 10 knocks, as nine pitchers saw action in Sunday's series opener.
Â
Game two is slated for a 3 p.m. first pitch on Tuesday, Oct. 30, at Rip Griffin Park, as the Black team looks to even the five-game series.
