Sendegeya and Thomson of Men's Tennis Capture John Breaux Cajun Tennis Classic Doubles Crown
September 25, 2016 | Men's Tennis
Alex Sendegeya and Bjorn Thomson emerged with a three-set win and the doubles title at the John Breaux Cajun Tennis Classic.
LAFAYETTE, La./Athens, Ga. – Alex Sendegeya and Bjorn Thomson of the Texas Tech men's tennis team grinded out a 7-6, 6-7, 6-2 battle versus LSU's Justin Butsch and Jordan Daigle to claim the doubles championship Sunday at the John Beaux Cajun Classic Tennis Classic on the University of Louisiana at Lafayette campus.
Sendegeya and Thomson capped their title run fueled by back-to-back wins over Top 35 doubles opponents from SEC schools.
Connor Curry tucked away his fourth consecutive victory with a 7-6 (2), 6-2 decision against Ole Miss' Tim Sandkaulen to earn the consolation bracket championship.
"First of all, congrats to Alex and Bjorn for taking the doubles title," Texas Tech head coach Brett Masi said. "They played very solid doubles all weekend long. After having a chance to close it out in the second set with match points, I'm proud they didn't get down on themselves. They were able to regroup and played a great third set. Overall, I'm really happy with how our guys came out and competed each day. It was tough conditions with the heat and humidity in Louisiana, and they never let that bother them. Connor did an amazing job winning the consolation bracket. Credit to him for bouncing back after a disappointing first match. We have a big week ahead with the ITA All-Americans around the corner. We need to be prepared for top competition and hope we can learn from this weekend."
At the Southern Intercollegiate Championship in Georgia, Jolan Cailleau secured a pair of victories in consolation action. He upended No. 81 Walker Duncan of Georgia by a 6-7, 6-4, 1-0 (10-8) score line and notched a 6-1, 6-4 triumph over Elon's Mario Paccini.
"Jolan picked up two high quality wins," Texas Tech assistant coach Jordan Szabo said. "I was particularly proud of his effort against Georgia as he fought back from a tough first set in hot and humid conditions to get a gritty ranked win which will help him confidence wise before ITA All-Americans next week."
The Red Raiders will turn their attention to the Saint Francis/ITA All-American Championships hosted by the University of Tulsa. The event's pre-qualifying rounds begin on Saturday, October 1st.
