Former Red Raider pitcher AJ Ramos earned his first MLB All-Star Game selection on Tuesday
LUBBOCK, Texas – Former Texas Tech pitcher AJ Ramos earned his first career Major League Baseball All-Star Game selection Tuesday evening as he will be in the National League dugout on July 12 in San Diego.
Ramos becomes the first Red Raider to be named to an All-Star Game roster in school history after turning in a dominant first half of the MLB season as the Miami Marlins' primary closer. He is one of 14 pitchers on the N.L. roster.
Ramos is one of four Marlins that will face the American League at Petco Park. The 87th MLB All-Star Game coverage begins at 6:30 p.m. CT on FOX.
The Lubbock native has been consistent in the back end of games this season as he is 24-for-25 in save opportunities entering Tuesday night's game at the New York Mets. He is 0-0 overall with a 2.45 ERA in 35 appearances out of the bullpen.
Ramos is well on pace to snap his career mark for saves set just a year ago when he successfully closed 32 games. He is 56-for-63 in save opportunities over the last two seasons alone.
Â
Ramos made his MLB debut with the Marlins in 2012, just three seasons after the organization selected the right-hander in the 21st round of the 2009 MLB First-Year Player Draft. Â He is 12-8 overall with a 2.59 ERA over the course of his MLB career which encompasses 256.2 total innings.
A fan favorite over his Red Raider career, Ramos was a regular weekend starter for Tech from 2006-09, going 16-16 during that time. He logged 254.0 innings during his career where he struck out 241 hitters, sixth-most in program history.
Ramos battled back from offseason elbow surgery to be named Tech's Opening Day starter prior to his senior season. He finished 5-5 that year over the course of 12 starts. His 44 starts during his career rank second all-time in the Tech record book.
Ramos is one of hundreds of former Red Raiders who will are invited back to Lubbock this fall when Tech hosts an alumni weekend on Sept. 16-18 for all baseball letterwinners. For more information, please contact Rodney Allison in the Double T Varsity Club at 806-742-3355.
