
Black Takes Series Lead With 7-1 Win In Game Three

Junior Connor Beck & freshman Clay Koelzer both had multi-hit games for the Black team.
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech baseball's Red & Black series took a 2-1 turn after Black posted a 7-1 victory over the Red team on Tuesday afternoon at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park.

It is the first time over the five-game set that Black (2-1) has held a series lead. The Black team has scored five or more runs in all three contests this fall.

Junior outfielder Connor Beck recorded another multi-hit performance on Tuesday, his second of the series, and was joined by freshman infielder Clay Koelzer in producing a two-hit game for the Black squad. Junior infielder Michael Davis also picked up two hits in game three for the Red (1-2) team, including a solo homer in the top of the seventh inning.

Sophomore Steven Gingery got the start and the win on the mound for Black after going five innings, striking out four and giving up only three hits. On the other side, sophomore Ty Harpenau tossed four innings, also ringing up four batters, while allowing three runs, two earned, and three hits.

The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fourth inning, when after senior outfielder Ryan Long shot a single to right field. Then, junior infielder Orlando Garcia followed with a two-run home run over the left field wall to give Black a 2-0 lead. Later in the frame, sophomore infielder Tyler Fowler drove in his first of two runs on the day behind a sacrifice fly to score Koelzer.

It was the start of three-straight frames where the Black team scored runs, as they added three more in the fifth and one in the sixth. The runs in the fifth came off two hits and an error, while the sixth started with an infield single from senior catcher Kholeton Sanchez, followed by a triple from freshman infielder Brian Klein to complete Black's seven-run day.

In the top of the seventh, Davis put Red on the board after sending a 3-1 pitch just to the right of the scoreboard in right-center field for the solo shot.
Freshmen Jake McDonald (1.0) and Connor Heffron (3.0) pitched in relief for the Black team, combining for three strikeouts and just three hits allowed.

Game four of the five-game set is slated for Friday, Nov. 11, at 2 p.m. at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park.
