Texas Tech baseball will have two former standouts competing in the 2016 MLB Postseason
LUBBOCK, Texas – Former Texas Tech baseball standouts Josh Tomlin and Kelby Tomlinson will compete in the 2016 Major League Baseball playoffs, as both Red Raiders will look to help their teams to World Series titles this October.
Â
Infielder Kelby Tomlinson and the San Francisco Giants will take on the New York Mets in the National League Wild Card game on Wednesday, Oct. 5, at 7 p.m. CST on ESPN. The winner of that game will move on to play the Chicago Cubs in a five-game series in the NLDS, which begins on Friday, Oct. 7, in Chicago.
Â
Pitcher Josh Tomlin and the Cleveland Indians will host the Boston Red Sox to start the American League Division Series on Thursday, Oct. 6, at 7 p.m. CST on TBS. Tomlin has been designated as the game three starter when the Indians travel to Boston, which is slated for a 3 p.m. CST start time on TBS on Sunday, Oct. 9.
Â
Tomlinson has been a vital part of the Giants organization during their march toward the playoffs. In his second season in the majors, Tomlinson has pieced together a .292 batting average, racking up 31 hits, while driving in six RBI and scoring 13 runs. Primarily a second baseman, Tomlinson has also made stops at shortstop, third base and in left field this season. In the series against the San Diego Padres, Tomlinson pinch hit in the 10th inning on Saturday, Sept. 24, delivering a sharp single to right field to give the Giants a 7-6 lead. Later in the frame, he would score off a Denard Span homer, giving him an extremely influential part of SF's 9-6 win over San Diego. On Sept. 30, he recorded a base hit while scoring a run in their 9-3 win over the Dodgers, helping the Giants hold off the St. Louis Cardinals for the second wild card spot. Tomlinson played one season at Texas Tech in 2011 before being selected in the 12th round of the 2011 MLB Draft by the Giants.
Â
Tomlin is in the midst of a career year, playing in his seventh season in the majors. Starting 29 games this season, Tomlin has posted a career-high 13 wins, earning his last on the final day of the regular season, going 7.1 innings to defeat the Kansas City Royals. In that outing, he rung up three batters, while allowing two runs in Cleveland's 3-2 win. Over his last four starts, Tomlin has put together an impressive 1.78 ERA and a 0.79 WHIP. Overall, he's struck out 118 batters this season, putting up a near 6-to-1 strikeout to walk ratio, as he heads into his first postseason start of his career on Sunday. Tomlin pitched one season at Texas Tech in 2006 before being chosen in the 19th round of the 2006 MLB Draft by the Cleveland Indians.
