Tomlin, Indians Advance To World Series

Red Raider Josh Tomlin and the Cleveland Indians defeat the Toronto Blue Jays in five games to advance to the World Series.
TORONTO, Ontario – Former Texas Tech baseball pitching standout Josh Tomlin and the Cleveland Indians finished off the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday, closing out the 4-1 American League Championship Series win to advance to the 2016 World Series.

Tomlin was the first Red Raider to advance to the League Championship Series and will be the first to play in the World Series. It is the first time since 1997 the Indians have played in the fall classic.

"He's been pretty good," Indians manager Terry Francona said after Tomlin's game two start. "He embodies so much of what we like about our team. And for him to be pitching in these games, I think everybody is excited about it. It's the way it should be."

Tomlin fired off 5.2 innings on Saturday, Oct. 15, in game two of the ALCS, helping the Indians to a 2-1 victory over Toronto. His final line featured six strikeouts, three hits, two walks and one run allowed en route to his career-high 15th win of the 2016 season and second of the postseason. His first playoff win came on Monday, Oct. 10, in game three of the ALDS in Boston against the Red Sox.

The Tyler, Texas, native led the MLB in walks per nine innings pitched with a mark of 1.035 this season. His one walk in the second inning against the Red Sox was the first he's issued since August 25, going 30.2 IP during that stretch. He only allowed two against the powerful Blue Jays offense. His strikeout-to-walk ratio of 5.9 was second in the league in 2016.

"He's right up there [as one of the] the top command guys in baseball," Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said after his team faced Tomlin Saturday.

Tomlin spent one year in Lubbock before being drafted by the Indians in the 19th round of the 2006 MLB Draft. Tomlin is the longest-tenured player on the Indians roster, helping the club to their first AL Central division title since 2007. That year was also the last time the Tribe appeared in the ALCS.

The Indians turn their attention to the winner of the NLCS, where the Los Angeles Dodgers lead the Chicago Cubs, 2-1, in the series. The Indians will host games one and two in Cleveland on Oct. 25 & 26, respectively.
