Tomlin Earns Win As Indians Advance To ALCS

Red Raider Josh Tomlin and the Cleveland Indians sweep the Boston Red Sox to advance to ALCS.
BOSTON – Former Texas Tech baseball pitching standout Josh Tomlin tossed five innings on Monday night, helping the Cleveland Indians sweep the Boston Red Sox to advance to the American League Championship Series.

Tomlin's final line as the ALDS Game 3 starter included 5.0 innings pitched, four strikeouts, four hits, two runs and one walk; earning his career-high 14th win of the 2016 season. Monday night also marked his first postseason appearance in his seven-year major league career.
"I don't really know how to describe it right now," Tomlin said. "This is a whirlwind of emotions. In a place like this, in an atmosphere like this, it's tough. We knew it was going to be tough. We knew what we were getting ourselves into coming in. But, we put ourselves in a good position going forward. We put good at-bats together, we made pitches when we had to and we get to celebrate right now, so it's a great feeling. It's an unbelievable feeling."

Tomlin entered the night leading the MLB in walks per nine innings pitched with a mark of 1.035. His one walk in the second inning was the first he's issued since August 25, going 30.2 IP during that stretch. His strikeout-to-walk ratio of 5.9 coming into night also ranked second in the league.

He spent one year in Lubbock before being drafted by the Indians in the 19th round of the 2006 MLB Draft. Tomlin is the longest-tenured player on the Indians roster, helping the club to their first AL Central division title since 2007. That year was also the last time the Tribe appeared in the ALCS.

With the win, Tomlin and the Indians turn their attention to the Toronto Blue Jays, who they'll take on in the ALCS beginning on Friday, Oct. 14, at 7 p.m. at Progressive Field on TBS.
