LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech junior right-handed pitcher Matt Custred became the second Red Raider drafted by the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday as he was selected in the 31st round (No. 930 overall) of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.
Custred is the fourth Red Raider to land with a major league club this week, joining fellow Braves draftee Matt Withrow (6th Round) along with Corey Taylor (7th Round/New York Mets) and Dominic Moreno (8th Round/Detroit Tigers).
This is the sixth time in program history and the first time since 2012 where four Tech pitchers have been selected in the draft. It is the 11th time in the past 12 years where at least four Red Raiders have heard their names called.
The Braves had not previously drafted a Red Raider prior to this year since 2011 when Atlanta selected former infielder Nick Popescu in the 33rd round. It is the first time in program history where the Braves have picked a pair of Red Raiders in the same draft.
Custred, a native of Keller, Texas, finished 1-2 for the Red Raiders this season after tossing 18.0 innings out of the bullpen. He allowed just 13 hits in 15 appearances while holding opponents to an impressive .206 batting average.
Custred is 2-4 during his three seasons as a Red Raider where he has entered primarily as a reliever. He has posted a 6.55 ERA during that time, appearing in 26 games while recording 43 strikeouts in 33.0 innings.
In addition to Custred, three Red Raider signees were also drafted as Aaron Coates (Newark, Del./Glasgow H.S.) was selected 11 picks later in the 31st round by the St. Louis Cardinals while Chandler Eden (Yuba City, Calif./Yavapai College) was chosen in the 17th round by the Toronto Blue Jays and Blaine Prescott (Amarillo, Texas/Midland College) went in the 28th round to the Texas Rangers.
