LUBBOCK, Texas - For the 11th time in school history, the ninth-ranked Texas Tech men's golf team has advanced to the NCAA Championships following a second-place finish at the Lubbock Regional on Saturday afternoon at the Rawls Golf Course.
This is the seventh time under head coach Greg Sands that the Red Raiders have made a championship appearance and the first time since 2013 where Tech came in 14th place.
"It never gets old, it's always fun to make Nationals," Coach Sands said. "There was a lot of pressure this tournament with the tournament being at home and the extra expectations but I thought the guys handled it well. The goal was to advance, there is no trophy for first or second, just advance. So in that regard, I'm happy and looking forward to cleaning up those mistakes we made."
Senior Clement Sordet clinched his second tournament victory of the season carding a 2-under 69 in the final round to share the individual medalist honor alongside Houston's Blair Hamilton at 8-under for the 54 holes. This marks the French native's ninth top-10 finish in the last 12 tournaments.
Hannes Ronneblad saved his best performance of the week for the final round of play as he shot a 5-under 66 to lead the Red Raiders. The sophomore started the day out with four birdies on the front nine before wrapping up with a long birdie putt on Hole 18 to close out the tournament in a tie for 22nd place overall.
In his final tournament on the Red Raiders' home course, senior Matias Dominguez tied for 14th place individually with his teammate Mito Pereira at 1-under 212 for the Regional.
No. 2 Texas took home the Regional title, the Longhorns' seventh team win of the season, coming in four strokes ahead of the Red Raiders who finished the tournament 18-under-par (834).
Texas Tech will now prepare for the NCAA Championships set to begin on May 29 at the Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, Fla.
