LUBBOCK, Texas - No. 23 Texas Tech scored multiple runs in three separate innings and hit two home runs on its way to a 9-5 victory over Baylor on Sunday afternoon to sweep the series over the Bears in front of 3,573 fans at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park.
The Red Raiders (22-14, 7-5 Big 12) have won swept seven of its last nine home series - dating back to 2014 - including four of its last six Big 12 home series while posting a 26-3 record during that span. In addition, it marked Tech's first series sweep over the Bears since 2004.
Baylor dropped to 13-22 overall and to 4-8 in Big 12 play.
Sophomore left-handed pitcher Ty Damron (3-2) pitched two innings out of the bullpen to earn the victory while allowing a run on three hits. Bears starter Nick Lewis (1-1) suffered his first loss of the season allowing four runs on five hits in three innings with two walks.
Tech junior outfielder Zach Davis led the way going 3-for-5 with two runs, three doubles and three RBI. He is the first Red Raider this season to hit three doubles in a game.
Sophomore outfielder Stephen Smith hit his team-leading sixth home run of the season going 2-for-5 with two runs and three RBI.
Eight Red Raiders had base hits in the game while out-hitting the Bears, 13-10.
Junior first baseman Eric Gutierrez went 2-for-4 with two RBI while extending his hit streak to 10 games. Freshman shortstop Orlando Garcia went 2-for-4 and senior infielder Tim Proudfoot came off the bench to play shortstop and hit his second home run of the season - a solo shot to lead off the Tech eighth inning giving the Red Raiders a four-run lead, 9-5.
Tech grabbed a 2-1 lead on Smith's homer in the first inning - a two-run shot over the left-field wall. Tech increased its lead to four runs on Davis' second double in as many innings as a line shot into the left-center gap scored both Garcia (singled) and catcher Tyler Floyd (walked).
Baylor cut Tech's lead to a pair of runs, 4-2, on a two-out RBI single in the sixth inning by catcher Aaron Dodson.
The Red Raiders put the game out of reach with four runs in the bottom of the sixth, started by Davis' third double of the game - which scored Floyd, who reached on an infield single. Stephen Smith drove in Davis with an RBI single to left and Gutierrez added two runs with a two-run double to right-center field.
Tech starting pitcher Dylan Dusek pitched four innings while taking a no decision allowing a run on three hits with three strikeouts and a walk.
Tech had a pair of relievers who made scoreless outings, including junior right-handed pitcher Matt Withrow (1.0 IP, 2 H, 1 BB, 1 SO) and senior right-handed pitcher Dominic Moreno (1.0 IP, 2 SO) who finished the game in the ninth.
Tech will return to the road for its third straight midweek road game on Tuesday, April 14 at Abilene Christian with a 6:30 p.m. first pitch at Scott Crutcher Field in Abilene, Texas.
