No. 23 Texas Tech Wins Series Opener Over Baylor

LUBBOCK, Texas - No. 23 Texas Tech defeated Baylor 8-4 behind sophomore right-handed pitcher Ryan Moseley's career-high eight strikeouts in six innings on Friday evening in the Big 12 series opener in front of 3,974 fans at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park.
Tech (20-14, 5-5 Big 12) captured its second Big 12 series opener win while improving to 17-6 at home this season. Baylor (13-20, 4-6 Big 12) dropped to 2-9 on the road this season.
Moseley (3-3) was dominating during his six frames while striking out at least one batter in each inning and recording two strikeouts in the third and fourth innings. He allowed one run on four hits with eight strikeouts and four walks.
Leading 4-1 through six innings, Tech sophomore outfielder Stephen Smith led off the bottom of the seventh with his team-leading fifth home run of the season to start a four-run inning for the Red Raiders.
Junior outfielder Zach Davis went 3-for-5 with a run scored, RBI and stolen base. Junior outfielder Tyler Neslony went 2-for-5 with a pair of doubles and junior outfielder Quinn Carpenter went 2-for-5 with a pair of RBI. Freshman second baseman Michael Davis went 2-for-4 with a run scored.
For the first time this season every starting Red Raider position player had at least one base hit.
The Red Raiders scored two runs in the first inning on Neslony's RBI double and Gutierrez' RBI groundout to third base. Tech added its third run the following inning with Smith's bases-loaded walk.
Carpenter gave Tech a four-run lead (4-0) with a two-out RBI single up the middle to score catcher Tyler Floyd.
Tech's four-run seventh included Smith's homer, Carpenter's RBI double and Zach Davis' RBI infield single.
Five Red Raiders had an RBI and seven players scored a run in the win.
Senior right-handed pitcher Corey Taylor pitched a scoreless inning in relief with a strikeout and junior right-handed pitcher Matt Custred finished the game throwing a scoreless ninth inning with three strikeouts.
Tech's pitching staff, including junior righty Dalton Brown who struck out the side in the eighth, finished with 15 strikeouts.
Tech and Baylor will play game two of their Big 12 series on Saturday, April 11 with first pitch set for 2:07 p.m. at Rip Griffin Park. All three games of the series will be televised on FOX Sports Southwest Plus.
