FORT WORTH, Texas -- Red Raider volleyball (14-14, 3-11) dropped a three-set bout to TCU (18-8, 8-6) on Wednesday at the University Recreation Center in Fort Worth.
The Horned Frogs won in straight-sets: 25-13, 26-24 and 25-18.
Leading the attack for Texas Tech was senior outside hitter Jenna Allen, who rattled off 11 kills for the second-straight match. Three other Red Raiders put up seven or more kills against the Horned Frogs: Lauren Douglass (8), Sarah Redding (8) and Katy Keenan (7). Douglass was efficient with her swings, firing off a hitting percentage of .438, to bring her season average to .383.
Tech landed 40 kills against the Horned Frogs, with junior setter Marguerite Grubb assisting on 31. She also had five digs and three kills.
Senior libero Carlie Foust put up nine of Tech's 34 digs, raising her season total to 453. Her marks give her sole possession of fourth-place in the Texas Tech single-season digs record books.
"There was a lot of great volleyball played tonight," head coach Don Flora said. "TCU was low error in their offense tonight and that kept some pressure on us."
The two sides battled back-and-forth early in the first set, before the Horned Frogs streaked to a 9-4 advantage. Redding quickly built up four kills, but TCU doubled her efforts during that stretch to take a 17-8 lead. She would finish with a team-high five in the first frame, with Allen racking up four; however, the Red Raiders would drop set one, 25-13. Grubb assisted on eight of Tech's 11 kills in the set.
The Red Raiders stopped an early run in the second set by the Horned Frogs with a quartet of kills from Keenan, Victoria Hinneburg and Allen (two), to face a 10-5 deficit. Down 16-8, Tech fired off seven of the next eight points to pull within 17-15, with a flurry of kills from Allen (three), Keenan and Douglass during that stretch. TCU responded with a run of their own to push their lead to 21-16.
Tech put together a run of their own to climb back in and tie the second frame at 23. The Red Raiders used that momentum to take the lead at 24-23 after a kill from Keenan, who would have four in the second set. TCU would stave off set point and close out set two, 26-24.
"Showing a sense of pride and battling was valuable to see in the second set," Flora said. "We began to see the correct things and then we made some quality plays from there."
Allen racked up six kills in the second set, making her the first in the match to reach double-digit kills with 10. Grubb added 14 assists, helping connect the Red Raiders for 17 kills in the second frame. Foust and Akiu each put up four digs in second set, giving Tech 13 in the set alone and 20 at the half. Douglass connected on four of six swings to give her a hitting clip of .667 in the second set, putting her at .556 at the half.
The Red Raiders quickly built a 4-2 lead in the third set behind back-to-back kills from Keenan, an ace by Foust and a combined block from Hinneburg and Douglass. Errors by the Horned Frogs, sandwiched by kills from Hinneburg and Douglass gave a Tech an 8-4 advantage going into TCU's first timeout of the frame. The two sides traded the next seven points, keeping Tech up, 11-8. However, a 4-0 run by the Horned Frogs gave them a 13-12 lead.
Tech battled through the middle of the frame, keeping it within one at 17-16. The final nine points featured several long rallies, but the Horned Frogs got the bounces to go their way, closing out the third set, 25-18.
The Red Raiders return home for senior day against Iowa State on Saturday, Nov. 21, at 3 p.m. at the United Supermarkets Arena.
