LUBBOCK, Texas -- Texas Tech volleyball put together strong first and third sets, but fell to No. 10 Kansas, 3-0, on Wednesday night at the United Supermarkets Arena.
The Jayhawks (16-0, 4-0) won in straight sets: 25-21, 25-14 and 25-20.
Senior Meghan Stacy and junior Lauren Douglass lead the team in kills with eight, with sophomore Alyssa Ybanez and freshman Katy Keenan following closely with seven each. The Red Raiders finished with 41 kills against the Jayhawks.
Junior Marguerite Grubb dished out 37 of Tech's 38 assists on Wednesday. Tech racked up 50 digs, with senior Carlie Foust registering almost half at 23.
The Red Raiders got off to a strong start, putting up a 5-0 run to take an early 5-1 lead in set one. Tech would hold that advantage until halfway through the first set. At the first media timeout, Kansas held a 15-13 lead and would maintain that two-point advantage to take the first set, 25-21.
Douglass and Keenan each had four kills through the first frame, with Grubb assisting on 13 of Tech's 16 kills. Foust also recorded 13 digs in set one. There were nine times in the first set where the score was tied, with the lead changing hands four times.
Tech put up another strong start to the second set before the Jayhawks rattled off a couple of runs to re-take the lead. At the half, Ybanez and Keenan each had six kills, with Douglass closely behind at five. Nine different Red Raiders had recorded at least one dig by halftime, with Foust at 21. However, Tech dropped the second frame, 25-14.
Opening the third set with five of the first six points, the Red Raiders capitalized on their adjustments at halftime. After Kansas tied the frame at 8, Tech grabbed repeated how they started the set with five of the next six to turn a 13-9 advantage into a Jayhawk timeout. Stacy was a key part of the Red Raider attack in the third set, tallying seven of Tech's 15 kills.
Tech would hold a 16-15 lead until the Jayhawks pushed ahead with a run of their own at 19-16. The Red Raiders battled back but would fall, 25-20, to close out the match. The third frame featured six tied scores and three lead changes.
Texas Tech (12-6, 1-3) returns to the United Supermarkets Arena on Saturday, Oct. 10, to face TCU on Alumni Weekend at 11 a.m. Admission is complimentary for all fans attending the match.
