LUBBOCK, Texas -- Texas Tech sophomore infielder Tanner Gardner and senior outfielder Tyler Neslony were both named among the top 20 prospects from this summer's California Collegiate League on Wednesday.
Neslony was ranked 13th in the listing of 30 overall prospects by the website PerfectGame.org, while Gardner was No. 17 overall. Texas Tech joined only Oklahoma State and Rice as the only programs nationally to have multiple players recognized among the top 20 prospects.
Neslony wrapped the summer among the hitters in the CCL after compiling a .341 average to go along with a pair of doubles, four triples and 15 RBI for the Santa Barbara Foresters. He and Gardner were among the four Red Raiders selected to the CCL All-Star roster.
Neslony, a native of Corpus Christi, Texas, enters his senior season with .313 career average in 120 games where he has totaled 10 home runs, 33 doubles, eight triples and 76 RBI. He will have the opportunity to wrap his career among Texas Tech's top all-time hitters as he is 10 doubles shy of entering the top 10 in school history.
Gardner, meanwhile, put together an impressive summer as well, hitting .344 overall with seven doubles, four triples and 28 RBI for a San Luis Obispo Blues team that qualified for the CCL playoffs along with the Foresters.
Gardner, a native of Frisco, Texas, hit .238 as a freshman a year ago to go along with eight doubles, a triple, three home runs and 11 RBI in 45 games. He was also 6-for-7 on stolen base attempts.
The Red Raiders are currently in the midst of their fall practice season which will conclude with the Red and Black Series. Dates and times for the entire series will be released in the upcoming days.
