EDINBURG, Texas -- The Texas Tech volleyball team rallied from its first deficit of 2014, defeating Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 3-1, to open play at the UTPA Tournament, in Edinburg, Texas, on Friday.
After dropping the first set, 25-21, the Red Raiders (4-0) stormed back to take the second, 25-21. Tech won the third set, 25-19, after benefiting from three separate 3-0 runs. Tech fell behind in the fourth set, 6-2, which forced head coach Don Flora to take a timeout. The Red Raiders responded with a 7-0 run, and eventually slammed the door on the match with a 25-20 win.
It was the first time this season Texas Tech trailed in a match, and the Red Raiders have yet to drop back-to-back sets in 2014.
"Some days the style of your opponent can present matchup problems," Flora said. "I compliment Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on how they played, putting pressure on us. The staff was pleased with how our defensive quality increased as the match progressed."
Offensively, it was the usual suspects for the Red Raiders. Reigning Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week Lauren Douglass continued her torrid start, leading the way with 14 kills on a hitting percentage of .385. She is hitting .494 with a team-leading 49 kills in 2014.
Breeann David and Jenna Allen each registered 13 kills for the Red Raiders, who logged 55 kills and hit .203 as a team, compared to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's 49 kills and .143 hitting percentage.
"Having Lauren be steady and our outside hitters raise their focus offensively was a positive step for our growth as a team," Flora said.
Defensively, four different Red Raiders turned in double-digit dig performances. All-American Rachel Brummitt had 17, and Emily Wright logged 13 digs. Jenna Allen and Marguerite Grubb each recorded double-doubles, as Allen notched 13 kills and 16 digs, and Grubb logged 44 assists and a career-high 17 digs.
The Red Raiders continue play at the UTPA Tournament tonight, when they play the host, Texas-Pan American, at 7 p.m.
