EDINBURG, Texas -- Behind powerful offensive performances from Mikia Mills and Jenna Allen, the Texas Tech volleyball team picked up their second win of the UTPA Tournament, sweeping Texas-Pan American, in Edinburg, Texas, on Friday.
The Red Raiders (5-0) took the first set, 25-17, behind six different runs of at least three points, including a 6-0 run in the middle of the set. Tech dominated the second set, 25-12, and fell behind in the third set, 22-18, but closed on a 7-0 run to finish the sweep.
This marks the second time since 2004 that Texas Tech has started a season 5-0, both coming during head coach Don Flora's four years. The Red Raiders now hold a 7-0 lead in the all-time series against UTPA.
Texas Tech moves to 37-16 in non-conference play under Flora, and 2-0 in true road games this season.
"Set one was as clean as we had played all day," Flora said. "It was nice to have that start in their gym. It was also important for us to finish set three in that fashion, with that run."
Jenna Allen and Mikia Mills led the way on the offensive side with 13 and 10 kills, respectively. Texas Tech, which entered the weekend leading the Big 12 in kills per set, registered 38 kills, with a hitting percentage of .223. The Red Raiders have hit above. 200 in all five matches this season.
Allen has at least seven kills in each match this season, and double-digit kills in three matches. Texas Tech is 35-4 under Flora when amassing more kills than their opponent, including a 5-0 mark this season.
"Jenna Allen having the night she did was huge for her confidence, " Flora said. "Her 13 kills and nine digs were huge."
On the defensive side, senior Rachel Brummitt turned in 20 digs to lead the way for Tech. Allen recorded nine digs, and Marguerite Grubb notched seven digs to go along with her 34 assists.
"Rachel had a huge impact in the match," Flora said. "Any time you have 20 digs, you have a big impact on the result."
The Red Raiders will wrap up competition at the UTPA Tournament tomorrow, when they face Lamar at 11 a.m.
