LAWRENCE, Kan. - No. 19 Texas Tech had its four-game win streak snapped during an 11-3 loss in its Big 12 series opener at Kansas on Friday evening at Hoglund Ballpark.
The Red Raiders (36-14, 11-8 Big 12) allowed a season-high eight walks while Kansas (28-20, 10-9 Big 12) starting pitcher Jordan Piche' (6-5) posted his second straight complete game striking out seven without a walk and allowing just one earned run in the win.
Tech right-handed pitcher Ryan Moseley (1-2) struck out a season-high seven batters while allowing a season-high five walks in five innings of work while giving up six runs in his second straight Big 12 Friday-night start.
Kansas, who was out-hit by the Red Raiders 7-6, had four multiple run innings scoring three runs in the third, fifth and sixth innings and plating two runs in the seventh. The Red Raiders, who dropped to 2-5 in Big 12 series openers, cut the Jayhawks lead to a run in the fourth, 3-2, but were held to just one run the remainder of the game.
Trailing 3-0, Tech scored its first runs of the game in the fourth inning on senior outfielder Adam Kirsch's seventh home run of the season - a homer that went into the middle of the trees behind the left-field fence, making the score 3-2.
KU tallied six runs over the following two innings while four walks and a hit-by-pitch allowed by Tech all came around to score for the Jayhawks. Overall, eight of KU's 11 runs reached base via walk or hit-by-pitch.
Sophomore outfielder Tyler Neslony doubled in the ninth inning, just one batter after junior second baseman Bryant Burleson tallied his second hit of the game with a single to left field to start the Tech ninth. Burleson then scored on Gutierrez' RBI groundout to shortstop.
Neslony (2-for-4) posted his 10th double of the season while extending his hit streak to 10 games and reaching base safely for the 22nd straight game - the longest streak by a Red Raider this season.
Texas Tech and Kansas will play game two of a three-game series on Saturday, May 3 with first pitch set for 2 p.m. at Hoglund Ballpark.
