ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - No. 21 Texas Tech had its eight-game win streak come to an end Monday afternoon with a 4-3 loss at New Mexico at Lobo Field.
The Red Raiders fall to 32-12 overall on the season while the Lobos (31-11-1) improve their win streak to nine games.
Smith, who entered in the fourth inning, pitched five strong innings out of the bullpens while allowing just one earned run (2 runs total) on five hits with three strikeouts while not allowing a walk.
UNM reliever Victor Sanchez (3-0) earned the win going 2.1 scoreless innings with one strikeout and one walk allowed.
Tech jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second on freshman Ryan Long's two-run single up the middle to score Eric Gutierrez and Adam Kirsch.
UNM scored two in the bottom of the second with back-to-back RBI singles off Tech starting pitcher Johnathon Tripp, who went three innings allowing two runs on three hits with two walks in his third start this season.
The Lobos took advantage of two Red Raider errors in the sixth to take a 3-2 lead, and then Tech tied the game on Tyler Neslony's two-out RBI single in the seventh inning.
UNM won the game in the eighth as first baseman Nick Zoellner reached on a hit-by-pitch with one out. Pinch runner Kirby McGuire then scored the following batter on left fielder John Pustay's double that went off the glove of a diving second baseman Bryant Burleson - as the ball redirected and went into shallow left field - while McGuire scored all the way from first base.
Center fielder Stephen Smith went 2-for-5 and Kirsch went 2-for-3 to lead the Red Raiders with two hits apiece.
The Red Raiders will be back in action tomorrow, Tuesday, Apr. 22, taking on TCU in Abilene at Crutcher Scott Field in Abilene, home of Abilene Christian University with first pitch set at 6 p.m.
