LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech sophomore Minta Spears and senior Clark Lammert have been selected as nominees for the Allstate Good Works Teams as announced by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) and Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) this week.
The 251 nominees between Division I, II, III and NAIA for men's and women's basketball were chosen by College sports information directors and basketball coaches across the country. They nominated players who exhibit exceptional leadership skills and an unwavering commitment to volunteerism. From the 158 NABC nominees and 93 WBCA nominees, distinguished voting panels will select two 10-member teams comprised of five student-athletes from the NCAA Division I level and five student athletes from NCAA Divisions II, III and the NAIA. The final roster of 20 award recipients will be unveiled in February.
Spears has started each of her 37 games the last two seasons at Tech while averaging 9.1 points per game. She is the current 3-point leader in the Big 12 Conference and is set to graduate Dec. 13 with Bachelor of Sciences degree in Sports Media after only five full semesters in Lubbock. She also was one of the lead students to help organize the Red Raider Outreach mission trip to Uganda, Africa the last two summers.
"Minta is the type of student athlete every coach wants to talk about," Lady Raider head coach Candi Whitaker said. "She's a gym rat, she works hard and succeeds in the classroom and she's a fantastic representative for Texas Tech."
Lammert is a senior set to graduate on Dec. 13 with a bachelor's degree in Media and Communications and begin a master's in Sports Management in the spring. Lammert has become a key reserve for the Red Raiders this season and leads the squad in charges taken. He traveled to China during the summer as a part of Reach USA Sports Ministry and is the founder of the Red Raider Reach program, an effort for Texas Tech student-athletes to give back to the Lubbock community.
"There is not a more deserving young man," said Texas Tech head coach Tubby Smith of the nomination. "He takes the words caring and sharing to heart. In terms of giving back, Clark in not only a leader on our team, but a leader on our campus and in our community. He is one of those individuals that will go out of his way to help someone. He is a great representative of both our program and Texas Tech University."
For the third year, the Allstate NABC and WBCA Good Works Teams® help spotlight the off-the-court good works and service to others that often goes unnoticed and unrewarded. From creating organizations benefitting at-risk youth to volunteering overseas to help impoverished communities, here are countless remarkable stories of service among this year's group of nominees. As full-time students and athletes, these players choose to dedicate their limited free time to improving the lives of those around them.
