LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech senior Amber Battle scored 21 points including 19 in the second half to lead Texas Tech past UTSA, 64-48 on Saturday in Game 4 of the Athletes in Action Classic at United Supermarkets Arena.
Tech (8-2) had to overcome a rough start after hitting only 4 of 20 in the first half to stay tied 22-22 at the break.
Redshirt sophomore Minta Spears kept the Lady Raiders in the game through the first 20 minutes while Battle had to stay on the bench with just two points and two fouls. Spears hit back-to-back 3-pointers and was 4 of 4 from the line in the first half for 10 of Tech's 22 points. She finished with 15 total - her seventh in double figures this season.
UTSA (4-5) tried to keep things close early in the second half but could not find away to capitalize on 18 Tech turnovers and hit only eight shots the rest of the game while Battle and senior Kelsi Baker opened things up for the Lady Raiders to pull away.
Battle scored eight of Tech's 14 points during a 14-4 run that pushed Tech's lead to 14 points after UTSA had cut it to 46-42. The Lady Raiders finished things off at the free-throw line and hit 24 of 33 overall - the most made free throws by a Tech team since hitting 23 of 30 against Florida Atlantic almost exactly one year ago (Dec. 21, 2013).
Baker finished as the third Lady Raider in double figures with 10 points.
Tech will now face off at 2 p.m. CT, Sunday with Houston (5-5) who beat Nicholls, 65-47 on Saturday. Both teams are 2-0 in the tournament.
