AUSTIN, Texas --The Texas Tech volleyball team fell victim to late runs in all three sets, losing to No. 2 Texas, 3-0, on Thursday night, in Austin, Texas.
The Red Raiders (14-3, 2-3) fought back from a 15-10 deficit to tie the match at 18, but from there Texas went on a 7-1 run to take the first set, 25-19. In the second set, Texas (13-0, 5-0) raced out to a 4-0 lead and Tech was able to cut the deficit to two points on three occasions, but Texas went on a 4-0 run to close the second set, winning 25-17. In the third set, Texas Tech pushed Texas to 17-17 once again, but at 21-19, Texas once again closed on a 4-0 run to take the set and match, 25-19.
Texas has yet to lose a set in Austin in 2014, winning all six matches, 3-0.
"We played much more high-quality volleyball than average volleyball tonight," Texas Tech head coach Don Flora said. "We had some miscues late in sets that really hurt us. It was a match of us allowing three and four-point runs when we really couldn't afford to. Those are things that we can control and usually do control."
Offensively, Texas Tech was led by Breeann David, who recorded 13 kills. She was joined in the double digits by Jenna Allen, who turned in 11. Tech hit .178 as a team, and recorded 38 kills, compared to 43 from Texas. From the setter position, Marguerite Grubb turned in 31 assists and seven digs.
"We were really pleased with the production from our outside hitters tonight," Flora said. "They both did some nice things. Having them combine for 24 kills is great for us, especially against the competition we faced and the environment we were up against."
On the defensive end, Tech allowed Texas to hit for a percentage of .318, marking the first time the Red Raiders, who entered the night ranked 16th in the NCAA in opponent hitting percentage, holding opponents to an average of .146, have allowed an opponent to eclipse the .300 mark this season. Rachel Brummitt led the way with nine digs.
As a team, Texas Tech registered seven total blocks, equaling the seven from the Longhorns. The Red Raiders got three blocks each from Mikia Mills, Lauren Douglass and Marguerite Grubb.
Texas Tech will be back in action next Wednesday, Oct. 15, against the Oklahoma Sooners. First serve from the McCasland Field House, in Noman, Okla., is scheduled for 7 p.m.
