NORMAN, Okla. --The Texas Tech volleyball team led in the 20's in three of the four sets and scored at least 23 points in each set, but fell to Oklahoma, 3-1, on Wednesday night, in Norman, Okla.
The Red Raiders (14-4, 2-4) snagged the first set, 25-22, on a 3-0 run that consisted of nothing but blocks, after the set was all square at 22. In the second set, Tech had leads of 15-11 and 17-14, but OU stormed back to take the set, 25-23. In the third, the two teams went back and forth the whole way, and Tech took a 24-22 lead, but was unable to slam the door as Oklahoma came back to win it, 26-24.
In the fourth set, Tech raced out to an 18-8 lead, but allowed a 12-1 run by the Sooners (13-5, 4-1), falling behind, 20-19. Tech would tie the fourth set at 24, but dropped the next two points to lose the match.
Every set of the match was tied at 22 or later. Oklahoma, which received votes in this week's American Volleyball Coaches Association Poll, still has yet to lose a match in the McCasland Field House, in 2014.
"Execution in certain rotations takes a heightened focus in great Big 12 matches ," Texas Tech head coach Don Flora said. "We did not put them away with good execution in multiple key spots. I think we handled our game plan well for the most part, but just didn't finish."
Offensively, Texas Tech was once again led by its outside hitters, as both Breeann David and Jenna Allen recorded 12 kills. Lauren Douglass turned in 10 kills of her own. Tech registered 49 kills as a team, hitting .192.
On the defensive end, Tech was a menace at the net, totaling 13.5 team blocks, led by Mikia Mills, who had seven, and Douglass, who totaled five. Texas Tech totaled 67 digs, led once again by Rachel Brummitt, who was responsible for 23.
"We played some clean volleyball and did a real complete job at the net with our blocking," Flora said. "Rachel continues to lead our defense and I liked her competitive spirit on that end throughout the match."
The Red Raiders held OU to a hitting percentage of .000 in the first set, but allowed the Sooners to hit .250, .375 and .200 in the subsequent sets.
Texas Tech will return home to host Iowa State this Saturday, Oct. 18. First serve in the United Supermarkets Arena is scheduled for 10 a.m. Admission will be complimentary.
