NORMAN, Okla. - The No. 11 ranked Oklahoma Sooners defeated Texas Tech 8-0 in game one of a Big 12 series at L. Dale Mitchell Park. The Friday-night contest, which was delayed last night due to weather and later suspended, was completed Saturday afternoon as Tech went in order in the top of the ninth inning to end the game.
Texas Tech drops to 19-23 overall and to 5-11 in Big 12 play while the Sooners improve to 32-10 overall and to 9-5 in league action.
Oklahoma starting pitcher Jake Fisher (1-1) earned the win in his first career start with a career-high 7.1 innings pitched and 10 strikeouts.
Tech starter Jonny Drozd (3-5) took the loss allowing five runs on nine hits with a strikeout in four innings of work.
Texas Tech junior third baseman Jake Barrios went 3-for-4 with a double and was one of five Red Raiders with a base hit in the game.
The Sooners scored two runs in the first inning with three base hits and added three runs in the fourth inning on shortstop Jack Mayfield's sixth home run of the season to take a 5-0 lead.
Fisher was cruising at this point with seven strikeouts through four innings. In fact, Fisher struck out three straight batters in the second, two in the third and notched one strikeout in the first and fourth innings.
The Sooners had 15 base hits in the game - its fourth straight game in double figures - as six Sooners finished with multiple hits.
Tech freshman reliever Justin Bethard pitched the final four frames, which equaled a season-high, allowing three runs on six hits with two strikeouts without allowing a walk.
