Lubbock, Texas - The Texas Tech baseball program volunteered Saturday morning at the 2013 Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure at the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center - in an event that drew more than 8,000 participants.
The Red Raiders were among numerous volunteers from the Texas Tech Athletics department, including student-athletes from the men's and women's basketball programs. Race for the Cure featured a 5K run and a 1K walk while the Tech baseball student-athletes helped line the streets to encourage all participants and to help navigate the course.
"It's a great event for our community and is one that benefits so many individuals and families," Texas Tech head baseball coach Tim Tadlock said. "It is a day our program and student-athletes feel fortunate to be involved with and an experience that each one of our players will always remember. We are just thrilled to be a small part of this great event."The event, now in its 19th year in Lubbock, serves as the primary fundraiser for breast cancer awareness and research. It is one of the several national events held by the Komen organization.
"We appreciate all who participated and volunteered to help us with our mission of a world without breast cancer," volunteer event coordinator Linda Thompson said. "It's great to see so many people come out and support what we are doing. As a survivor, it is great to see everyone with the same mission."
