Red Raiders In Contention Heading Into Final Round In Tucson

LUBBOCK, Texas - No. 15 Texas Tech played even par in today's second round of the NCAA Tucson Regional but that was not enough to move into the top five as the Red Raiders slipped one spot to seventh place at 1-under 567.
The good news for the Red Raiders is that they are just two strokes back of California and Washington, who are currently tied for fifth place, and six strokes out of second place Arizona. The top five teams advance to the NCAA Championships in Stillwater, Okla., May 31-June 5.
Tomorrow's third and final round will be crucial for the Red Raiders and will get underway at 9:30 a.m. CDT at the Omni Tucson National Golf Resort. Fans wishing to the follow the action in the final round can do so online at www.golfstat.com.
"Today was a roller coaster ride and we just couldn't get over the hump," said Texas Tech head coach Greg Sands. "Having said that we didn't play poorly - we just didn't give ourselves a chance to move up in the standings. This thing is going to be extremely close so we need to go out and put together a solid final round and see where that takes us."
The Red Raiders shot an even 284 in today's second round which was the sixth best team total of the day. San Diego State, who led after day one, increased its overall lead in the tournament and now stands at 12-under 556 and is five strokes ahead of host Arizona (7-under 561). Texas A&M is in third place at 5-under 563 while Pepperdine is in fourth at 4-under 564.
Senior Nils Floren continues to lead the Red Raiders after round two as he turned in an even scorecard of 71. Floren remains 4-under par and is three strokes behind Oregon State's Alex Moore who leads the field at 7-under 135.
Sophomore Fin Ewing made the biggest jump of the day for Tech as he climbed from a tie for 30th to a five-way tie for 19th after turning in a 1-under 70 in the second round. Senior Matt Smith dropped one spot to 19th after turning in his second consecutive even scorecard. r Redshirt freshman Chandler Rusk improved a stroke from yesterday's first round and is tied for 35th at 3-over 145. Junior Tyler Weworksi slipped to a tie for 63rd after shooting 6-over today and now stands at 9-over 151.
