LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech men's golf team watched its season come to an end this afternoon as the Red Raiders struggled in the third and final round at the NCAA Tucson Regional and ended the tournament in ninth place at 6-over 858.
The Red Raiders entered today's final round just six strokes out of second place at 1-under but a 7-over 291 in today's round sealed their fate. Only the top five teams advance to the NCAA Championships and Texas Tech will see its two year streak of advancing to the championships come to an end.
San Diego State won the tournament at 19-under 833 followed by Texas A&M (12-under 840), California (9-under 843), Pepperdine (8-under 844) and Arizona (8-under 844).
"Today was really tough," said Texas Tech head coach Greg Sands. "It's a shame that Nils (Floren) and Matt's (Smith) career has to end like this because they have been very special to our program. We just couldn't seem to do much right today and from the looks of the other regionals across the country, we aren't alone in saying that. I am really proud of this group and what they have done all year long."
Senior Nils Floren capped of his stellar career at Texas Tech with a tie for fourth place at 5-under 208. Floren fired a 1-under today in the third and final round after logging a 4-under on Thursday and even par on Friday. He finished four strokes behind UC Davis' Matt Hansen who won the individual title at 9-under 204.
Junior Tyler Weworksi saved his best round of the tournament for today as he fired a 1-under 70 that helped him move up to 53rd overall. Senior Matt Smith, who was tied for 19th after the second round, slipped to a tie for 34th after logging 3-over 74 in today's round.
