LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech women's soccer team held its sixth-straight opponent scoreless, but Baylor held the Red Raiders without a goal in a 0-0 Big 12 match held at Betty Lou May Field in Waco, Texas, in front of 608 fans.
"It was a battle for sure - Baylor challenges you to be perfect on defense, in the air and on set pieces," head coach Tom Stone said. "They launch the ball downfield and their commitment to lock you in is impressive. Having said that, I was proud of our effort and our mentality on the day. We had three great chances to win it and had a great look in overtime when Dawn (Ward) spun her player in the six but Baylor's keeper made two great saves to keep it even."
Tech (7-3-2, 1-0-1) the school record for consecutive with its sixth-straight tonight. Victoria Esson recorded three saves on the night to record her fifth shutout of the season. It is the ninth shutout of the season for the Red Raiders.
"Nine shutouts is a great stat especially now that we are two games into the Big 12 season," Stone said. "Although we were under some real pressure, we never looked like we would give up a goal to be fair so I was very pleased with Victoria (Esson) and our backline."
Taylor Lytle and Dawn Ward each lead the team with three shots on the night.
Baylor's Courtney Seelhorst made four saves over 110 minutes of action.
It is the second time this season Tech has finished a match in a 0-0 tie. The previous tie was against Arizona in Tucson, Ariz., on September 18. The last time the Red Raiders had two 0-0 ties in the same season was 2007.
Baylor (9-2-2, 1-1-1) outshot Tech 16-11 for the match. Tech is now unbeaten in its last six matches.
The Red Raiders will now travel to Norman, Okla., to face Oklahoma at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 2
"Anytime you go the full 110 minutes, you have to focus on recovery while traveling to your next match, which is just as important as tonight's was," Stone said. "It's a tall order but these kids have shown great resiliency and a strong will to make every game count for us. I anticipate a quality recovery day and a great effort on Saturdy."
