LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech soccer team closed its non-conference portion of its schedule with a 1-0 loss Friday night to Alabama at the UA Soccer Stadium in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
The Red Raiders, playing without regular starters Taylor Lytle, Whitney Sharpe and Hayley Haagsma, drop to 7-2 entering Big 12 play next weekend, while the Crimson Tide improve to 5-2 overall.
"It sure hurts to lose three starters in one weekend like we did last week, and it showed as we clearly missed Lytle," Tech head coach Tom Stone said. "It's like a basketball team that loses its point guard. Everything was just a little off and decisions in the final third were lacking the normal sophistication Lytle gives us. Having said that, full credit goes to Alabama for playing very hard throughout the match. They got the goal and deserved to win."
Alabama got on the board just before halftime on a through ball in the 43rd minute to Arial Amijo, who was able to slip the ball past Tech goalkeeper Erin Wikelius to give the Crimson Tide what turned into the match's only goal.
Despite a few offensive chances in the second half, Tech was unable to counter and tie the match following the break. Tech outshot the Crimson Tide, 14-13, overall in the match with Justine Bernier collecting two saves in the match. Wikelius posted four saves in the Tech goal.
The Red Raiders were led offensively by Jessica Disabella, who had both of Tech's shots-on-goal and finished with a match-high five shot attempts. Jessica Fuston also attempted three shots for Tech.
Tech will take the rest of the weekend off and turn to the second part of its season with the start of Big 12 play next weekend as the Red Raiders travel to the state of Oklahoma to face the Oklahoma Sooners on Friday (Sept. 24) and the Oklahoma State Cowgirls next Sunday (Sept. 26).
