Red Raider Profile - Taylor Christian
LUBBOCK, Texas - Although the Texas Tech baseball team has wrapped up its fall season, Texas Tech Athletics Communications will continue taking an inside look into the Tech program with Red Raider Profiles on each player.
Taylor Christian (RHP - 6-5, 195 - R/R -RS So./TR - Southlake, Texas/Liberty Christian/Weatherford JC)
Taylor Christian enters his career at Texas Tech after spending two seasons at Weatherford College. Christian received a medical redshirt in 2009 and then pitched for Weatherford in 2010. Following his redshirt-freshman season, Christian was selected by the New York Mets in the 41st round of the 2010 Major League Baseball First-Year Players Draft.
Christian was used primarily out of the Coyote bullpen last season pitching in 11 games with a 0-1 record and 4.50 ERA with 10 strikeouts and allowing seven walks in 10.0 innings.
This past summer, Christian pitched for the McKinney Marshals in the Texas Collegiate League. Christian made six appearances (all relief) going 0-1 with a 5.19 ERA in 8.2 innings pitched with seven strikeouts and seven walks allowed.
"Taylor Christian has a good arm and is a big guy," head coach Dan Spencer said. "He has stuff where he can pitch at the end of a game. He has gotten a lot better in the winter as we have worked on some things. We feel like he is going to be a very valuable guy for us."
In fact, Christian is one of five Red Raiders who have been drafted during their careers. Christian joins Andre Wheeler (OF/LHP), Daniel Coulombe (RHP), Rusty Shellhorn (LHP) and Stephen Hagen (INF) as Tech players who have been selected in the MLB Draft. Hagen is the only Red Raider to be drafted twice.
