Coach Hays' Signing Day Comments
LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech softball coach Shanon Hays announced the signing of five future student-athletes to national letters of intent Monday as Hannah Bell, Cara Custer, Chandler Moore, Adriana Perez and Katelyn Williams will all join the program next fall.
"We are very excited to have this group sign to attend Texas Tech," Hays said. "This is a very talented group that could immediately have an impact on our team as soon as next year, and we are glad that they chose to become members of our program."
A heavily recruited pitcher out of Spanaway, Wash., Custer highlights the class as she is one of three pitchers to sign with Tech. Custer, a hard-throwing right-hander, will play both inside the circle and occasionally at first base for Tech after earning Spanaway Lake MVP honors the last two seasons on top of playing with the Washington Lady Hawks travel team.
"We are very fortunate to sign Cara over several big schools," Hays commented. "She throws hard and has defeated some of the best travel teams in the country last summer. We're obviously thrilled to have her and think she can make an immediate impact for us in the circle."
Tech's other two pitching signees in Bell (Dayton, Texas/Dayton H.S.) and Moore (Broomfield, Colo./Broomfield H.S.) will add velocity to the pitching staff as both have been among the top strikeout pitchers in their respective states during their high school careers.
Bell earned District 19-4A MVP honors in 2010 for Dayton High School, while Moore was an honorable mention recipient on the All-Colorado softball team in 2009. Moore will also work as first baseman for Tech.
"All three of these pitchers definitely increase the talent level in the circle for us," Hays added. "They all have better velocity than what we've had, and we are excited to get them here and see what they can do."
Perez (Lancaster, Calif./Paraclete H.S.) will arrive at Tech as one of the top junior college prospects in the nation after hitting .567 with 15 home runs and 57 RBIs as a freshman at Antelope Valley College last year. The right-handed hitter was named 2010 California Junior College Player of the Year as well as the California Diamond Catcher of the Year.
Williams (Ceder Park, Texas/Vista Ridge H.S.) added solid offensive numbers last year as a high school junior. She hit .538 with a home run and 32 RBIs for a Vista Ridge squad that went 26-7 last year.
"Adriana has a reputation for being a big-time hitter, who can immediately bring more pop to our lineup," Hays said. "Katelyn is more of a gap-to-gap type hitter who runs well and could really hit anywhere in our lineup. We expect both of them to be contributors in our lineup."
