AMES, Iowa - Backed by a season-high .441 hitting percentage, 10th-ranked Iowa State swept Texas Tech, 3-0 (25-16, 25-16, 25-18), Wednesday night in front of 1,650 fans at the Ames High School gymnasium.
Iowa State (11-3; 4-2) came out with the hot hand in the first set as the Cyclones raced out to an early 10-4 lead. The Red Raiders (3-13; 1-6) were able to get on a six-point run, but with the score 23-16, Iowa State needed only two points to close the set and send the Tech into comeback mode.
Tech limited itself to only two errors in the first frame on its way to a .345 hitting percentage. Iowa State did one better, however, as the Cyclones had only one error and a .500 percentage, limiting many of Tech's offensive opportunities.
Similar to its match last Saturday against Kansas, the Red Raiders appeared to have corrected its defensive errors from the first set as both teams traded points to a 7-7 tie. The Cyclones mounted a rally, though, to win eight of the next 10 points for a 15-9 lead that never slipped away.
The Red Raiders could not build any momentum in the third set to get back into the match as the Cyclones overcame Tech's opening-point win to lead the remainder of the frame.
Iowa State limited itself to only six attacking errors compared to Tech's 16. The Red Raiders finished the match hitting .200.
Amanda Dowdy led the Tech attack with 13 kills, while Miara Cave and Aubree Piper added eight kills each. Setter Karlyn Meyers recorded 33 assists in the match to go along with a pair of blocks. Jackie Vincent ended with a team-high 11 digs, followed only by Dowdy with seven.
Iowa State's Victoria Henson finished with a match-high 17 kills with 10 of those coming in the final frame. She was joined in double-figures by Carly Jenson's 10 kills.
The Red Raiders will get their first break from Big 12 action this Saturday before returning to the United Spirit Arena Oct. 13 to face the Colorado Buffaloes. First serve is slated for 6:30 p.m.
