LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech safety Cody Davis became the ninth freshman All-American in school history today as he was named to the 2009 All-Freshman First-Team list by Phil Steele Publications.
Davis, a redshirt freshman from Stephenville, had big shoes to fill this season as he replaced a first-team All-Big 12 performer and a Denver Broncos second-round draft choice in Darcel McBath. Davis rose to the challenge, however, and turned in a stellar freshman season that included 72 total tackles, one tackle for loss and six pass breakups. His 72 tackles on the year are second on the squad behind junior linebacker Brian Duncan who owns 80 on the season.
Joining Davis on the Phil Steele Postseason Awards list were All-Big 12 performers OL Brandon Carter (first-team), DE Brandon Sharpe (second-team), OL Marlon Winn (second-team), DB Jamar Wall (second-team), RB Baron Batch (third-team), WR Alex Torres (third-team), DE Daniel Howard (third-team), QB Taylor Potts (fourth-team) and RB Eric Stephens (fourth-team).
The Red Raiders have begun preparations for the 2010 Valero Alamo Bowl as they will face the Michigan State Spartans at 8 p.m. (ESPN) on Jan. 2, in the Alamodome in San Antonio. Tickets for the game are available for purchase online at www.texastech.com or by calling the athletics ticket office at (806) 742-TECH.
