LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech defensive end Brandon Sharpe (Lyons, Ga.) was named to Sporting News' All-America third team today, becoming the third player this season to receive All-America status. Safety Cody Davis and wide receiver Alex Torres were named to freshman All-America teams last week.
Sharpe, a senior first-year starter, posted two sacks in the first five games of the season, before exploding for 13 in seven conference games. His 15 sacks rank second nationally and Texas Tech as a team ranks second with a school-record tying 40 sacks. Sharpe also broke the single-season school record in sacks, snapping the previous mark of 14, set by Adell Duckett in 2003.
The Red Raiders finished the regular season with an 8-4 record, 5-3 in conference play, and will face the Michigan State Spartans in the Valero Alamo Bowl on Sat., Jan. 2, at 8 p.m. Tickets are still available through the Texas Tech Athletic Ticket Office (www.texastech.com or 888-GO-BIG-12).
