LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech interior linemen Brandon Carter (Longview, Texas) and Brandon Sharpe (Lyons, Ga.) were both named to the Associated Press All-America third team Tuesday. The honor is the second of the postseason for Sharpe and Carter's inclusion marks his second straight All-America year.
Carter anchored an offensive line that was the foundation of an offense that ranked among the top five in passing and top ten in total offense and scoring nationally. The senior also allowed on one sack on the season, which also is the only sack credited to him over the last two years.
Sharpe, who also was named to Sporting News' third team earlier Tuesday, posted two sacks in the first five games of the season, before exploding for 13 in seven conference games. His 15 sacks rank second nationally and Texas Tech as a team ranks second with a school-record tying 40 sacks. Sharpe also broke the single-season school record in sacks, snapping the previous mark of 14, set by Adell Duckett in 2003.
Carter and Sharpe's honors bring Tech's 2009 All-American total to four as safety Cody Davis and receiver Alex Torres have been named to freshman All-America squads.
The Red Raiders finished the regular season with an 8-4 record, 5-3 in conference play, and will face the Michigan State Spartans in the Valero Alamo Bowl on Sat., Jan. 2, at 8 p.m. Tickets are still available through the Texas Tech Athletic Ticket Office (www.texastech.com or 888-GO-BIG-12).
