David Tairu Earns Big 12 Weekly Honor

LUBBOCK, Texas - David Tairu, a junior from South Plains College, was named the MVP of the Duel in the Desert Tournament as the Red Raiders started the season with a 3-0 record.
The 6-3 guard from Temple Hills, Maryland, led the team in scoring in two of three contests, averaging 14.0 points for the weekend. He started all three games, connecting on 14-of-27 (.519) shots from the field. He was also 5-of-9 (.556) from the floor and 9-of-11 (.818) from the charity stripe, while adding three assists and three steals.
David's accolade marks just the sixth time in Big 12 history a Tech player has won rookie honors.
The Red Raiders were Duel in the Desert Champions. They opened the season on Friday evening with an 88-49 win over South Dakota. On Saturday, Tech defeated Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 66-59, and then stopped Pac-10 foe Oregon State on Sunday afternoon, 64-60.
The Demons of Northwestern State are in town for Thursday's 7 PM game and the Lamar Cardinals visit the United Spirit Arena on Saturday at 7 PM.
