
Track Earns National Academic Honors

LUBBOCK, Texas - The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Association (USTFCCCA) has announced All-Academic Scholar individuals and teams for the 2008 season. The Red Raiders put eight student-athletes on the All-Academic Scholar list and the women's team was named an All-Academic Scholar Team. The Lady Raiders finished the season with a cumulative 3.130 grade-point average. They also had the most successful season in track program history. A 10th place finish at the NCAA Indoor Championships was followed by a program best fifth-place finish at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Four female student-athletes earned the honor of being named an All-Academic Scholar. Julianne Kennedy, Patience Knight, Ozie Okolie and Kelley Schulz were honored for their achievements both on and off the field. Kennedy earned All-American honors in the pentathlon, while Knight earned All-American status in both indoor and outdoor shot put. Okolie owns both the school record in the weight and hammer throws and Schulz has her name on the outdoor pole vault record. Shawon Harris, Michael Cast, Gilbert Limo and Nathan Lowry were the male student-athletes who earned the All-Academic Scholar. Harris capped off his career with six All-American honors and owns the indoor school 55M hurdles. Cast won the Big 12 and NCAA Midwest Regional Championships. Limo in his first year at Tech qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the 3000M steeple chase. Nathan Lowry earned his first All-Big 12 honors of his career in the 110M hurdles. All student-athletes had to have a 3.25 cumulative GPA and met either the NCAA Division I Indoor provisional or automatic mark or a NCAA Division I Outdoor regional or national qualifying standard.
