LUBBOCK, Texas - Three of the most experienced and accomplished prep position players to ever sign with the Red Raiders, Mikey Kenney, Jordan Palmer and Randi Tongate, will begin their collegiate careers next fall as Texas Tech announces its softball signing class for 2009.
Mikey Kenney is one of only 15 prep stars, nationwide, named to the Under Armour prep All-American team as a 2009 prospect. The outfielder competed in the 2008 All American Under Armour Softball Game which was broadcast this summer on the ESPN family of networks.
Kenney was one of only two sophomores to earn All-Colorado honors after she hit .414 with four home runs and 20 RBI for Arvada West High School in Arvada, Colo. She followed that success up in her junior campaign as she batted .407 with 19 runs scored, 18 RBI and eight stolen bases. Those numbers earned her another spot on the Class 5-A All-Colorado team, to cap off a junior year which also included her conference's player of the year award. She competes for the 18U gold team, Colorado Stars of the Amateur Softball Association (ASA).
Jordan Palmer was named to the All-Area District 8-4A team (Dallas area) playing third base in her junior year at Joshua High School. She is already a two-time all county selection as an infielder as well. Competing for the Texas Travelers, an ASA 18U gold team, she is a speedy slap hitter who will likely see time in the outfield as a Red Raider.
Randi Tongate was named to the All-Area District 4-5A team (Dallas/Fort Worth area), earning defensive most valuable player honors while catching for Weatherford High School in 2008 during her junior year. A teammate of Palmer's on the Texas Travelers in ASA, she brings a wealth of experience at key positions and will likely play infield during her career at Texas Tech.
"This is really an exciting class for us. Each of these players brings a great resume of top playing experience into a program which added seven key newcomers for this season," interim head coach Amy Suiter said. "There will be so many options, given all the positions these athletes can cover. The versatility that each of them brings will really help move us forward."
