Lubbock, Texas - Texas Tech will host the Red Raider Jackrabbit Open at the Texas Tech Intramural Soccer Field Friday evening. The women will begin at 6:30 p.m. and the men will start at 7 p.m. CT. The course run is around the open field on the corner of 4th and Quaker.
The Red Raider women enter the meet with a No. 25 national ranking, announced this week from the USTFCCCA. The women's team will be the only team ranked in the field. All but three Raiders on the women's squad will be competing. Four-time NCAA national title holder, Sally Kipyego, Irene Kimaiyo and Gladys Kipsang, will set foot for their first meet on the season. Freshman Katherine Priebe, who placed third at the Buffalo Stampede and led the Tech women in that race, will be competing, as well. Tech will race with seven newcomers, along with two juniors and one senior. The womens' squads will run a 3-mile course.
After placing first at the Buffalo Stampede, the Tech men's squad hopes to continue its success in its first home meet. Each individual on the Tech men's squad will represent the Red Raiders on the 8K course. A total of five newcomers will run, along with Corry Higgins and John Means, who led the men's squad with third- and fourth-place finishes last week.
Eleven other schools will attend this weekend's meet: Abilene Christian, College of the Southwest, Eastern New Mexico, New Mexico Military Institute, Lubbock Christian, South Plains College, Sterling College, University of Texas Permian Basin, Wayland Baptist, West Texas A&M and Western Texas College.
The Texas Tech Intramural Soccer Field is located on the southwest side of the Medical Center on 4th Street. It is across the Texas Tech Parkway. There will be signs to help direct traffic to the course and the soccer field lights will be on.
Texas Tech will host the 2007 Big 12 Cross Country Championships Oct. 26.
