
Red Raiders Stay with the Stampede

CANYON, Texas - The Texas Tech cross country team competed strong in the first meet on the season Friday as both teams completed at West Texas A&M's Buffalo Stampede.
Joining the Red Raiders in the tournament field was El Paso, Wayland Baptist, Angelo State, Lubbock Christian and Eastern New Mexico in addition to tournament host West Texas A&M.
The men's squad dominated the 8K course during the season opener, posting a first place finish with five-runners placing in the top-10. Sophomores Cory Higgins and John Means led the men's team with a third and fourth finish by clocking a 21:17 tie. The next group of Red Raiders to cross the finish line was sophomore Jake Szot in sixth with a 21:45, while junior Zachary Quinones at a 21:46 and freshman Logan Culotta with 21:54 finished seventh and eighth, respectively. The Raiders totaled 28 team points, ahead of second place Wayland Baptist and third place El Paso Community College. David Boston, a sophomore, finished in 11th place with run of 22:12, while Chase Wade and Eric Ayala followed in the 15th and 19th positions following times 22:32 and 22:49. Sophomore Jeremy Kight finished 29th and Noel Conrad marked 37th with Adam Legler, Paul Julmeus, Wade Smith, and Daniel Ford marking the 46th, 48th, 51st, and 60th spots.
The Tech women, competing with a young traveling squad consisting of one sophomore and eight freshmen, took third following Wayland Baptist and El Paso CC. Katherine Priebe, a freshman, led the Tech squad with a third place finish, clocking a 19:51 in the 5K course. Freshman Chelsea Ervi and sophomore Michelle Erdman took eighth and tenth place with times of 20:38 and 20:48. Freshmen Kayla Sayegh marked 16th place finish with a time of 21:29, while Addison LeMaster and Kaci Westervelt placed 22nd and 23rd with a tied time of 22:15.
The Red Raiders will next be in action as they host the Red Raider Jackrabbit Open, which will be held at the intramural soccer fields on Sept. 14.
