LUBBOCK, Texas - Dion Miller, former student-athlete and coach, has been renamed as the men's and women's sprints and hurdles coach for the Texas Tech Track and Field program.
Miller returns to Tech after spending three years as an assistant coach with the Arizona State University track and field program. Before coaching at ASU, Miller spent two seasons at the University of Washington.
Miller coached Jacquelyn Johnson, who picked up four multi-event NCAA titles and All-America honors in 2006 and 2007. He helped coach the women's team to the 2007 Indoor and Outdoor National Championship title. Miller also assisted the women to back-to-back Pac-10 Conference Outdoor Championship titles in 2006 and 2007.
In his two seasons with Washington, Miller brought in three prep All-Americans and numerous junior college transfers. Miller guided seven sprinters to Top 10 marks on the all-time UW lists.
Prior to UW, Miller coached with head coach Wes Kittley.
Miller helped build Tech's sprinters into one of the premier groups in the nation. In 2002, he coached student-athletes to 13 All-America honors. The 4x100m relay team captured its first Big 12 Championship title.
During Miller's final season with the Red Raiders they saw a pair of record-setters compete under Miller, including Licretia Sibley. Sibley is the second woman in the program's history to receive multiple All-America honors in one season.
Miller earned his degree in exercise sport science from Tech in 1998. He was an All-American and captured 13 All-Conference honors for the Red Raiders. Miller qualified for the NCAA eight times for Tech and also qualified for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials in 1996.
"I am thrilled to have Dion, a former athlete and All-American, back at Texas Tech," head coach Wes Kittley said. "He brings a tremendous amount of prestige to Tech after winning the National Championships at ASU."
"Dion is a quality person and brings a wonderful family that will fit in well in Lubbock," Kittley said.
Miller and his wife, Carol, have one daughter, Alandrea, 12, and one son, Kameron, 6.
