LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech track and field team had two student-athletes named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VI teams for women's track and field, as announced by College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Thursday. Senior Lindsey Walesheck earned first team honors, while junior Julianne Kennedy was named to the second team.
Walesheck has accumulated a 3.94 grade point average as an exercise and sport science major. The Cedar Park, Texas, native finished her final year as a Red Raider with her first national qualifications during both the indoor and outdoor seasons. She is the current school-record holder for indoor women's pole vault as she cleared 13'-5.25" in 2007.
Kennedy was voted to the second team with a 3.90 GPA in exercise and sport science. The junior from Sherman, Texas, championed the Big 12 indoor women's pentathlon and had her first trip to the NCAA Indoor Championships with the effort. Kennedy holds the school record in both the women's pentathlon and heptathlon, having reset each on multiple occasions during the 2007 season.
In order to be nominated for Academic All-District and All-America honors, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve, must have a 3.20 cumulative grade-point average and must have completed at least one full academic year at her institution.
After being named to the District VI first team, Walesheck will now represent the district on the national ballot for Academic All-America consideration. District VI encompasses universities from the states of Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico.
