The Texas Tech softball program has announced that five high school players have signed National Letters of Intent to join the Red Raiders for the 2009 season. Emily Bledsoe (Houston, Texas/Foster High School), Stephanie Drewry (Houston, Texas/St. Pius X High School), Holley Gentsch (Hewitt, Texas/Midway High School), Karli Merlich (Federal Way, Wash./Kennedy High School), and Skyler Peterson (Marysville, Wash./Marysville-Pilchuck High School) will attend Texas Tech University in the fall of 2008.
"This is such a tremendous class for us," head coach Teresa Wilson said. We bring in quality and depth at each of these pivotal positions. And, these are recruits who have taken the time to get to know us and our philosophy and will be able to make an immediate impact on our program."
"Emily's a versatile shortstop who can hit from either side who we look forward to working with to become one of the truly game-changing switch hitters in our sport. Drewry, well-she's a slapper who's nicknamed 'Rocket' so that's a great thing, and we look forward to her joining our outfielding corp. Holley is a fine catcher, with an enormous upside in terms of thinking the game and handling the staff. We look for her to work with what will be one of the finest pitching staffs Tech has ever seen and to do it with a high degree of confidence."
"With Karli Merlich we're fortunate to have a player in the mold of some of the game's greats. She's a left-handed pitcher who will likely see time as an infielder when she's not in the circle because she's such a capable hitter as well. Skyler is a first-baseman who has very soft hands and a great feel for the game. We're going to be looking at a completely new infield core over the next few years and I'm very excited about this signing class and their understanding of the game and of our system."
"This class will come to Lubbock with a good deal of national-level junior program experience. We look for them to compete immediately and continue the growth that's been started."
