LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech Baseball team will begin preparations for a run at the 2007 Big 12 Championship on Thursday afternoon as the Red Raiders begin fall practice at Dan Law Field.
The Red Raiders finished in eighth place in last year's Big 12 regular-season standings but hope that the return of a core group of talented players will lead to big things in 2007. Texas Tech will be anchored by the return of two freshman All-Americans from last season in Roger Kieschnick and Miles Morgan. Kieschnick was the consensus (coaches and media) freshman player of the year in the Big 12 last season while Morgan was tabbed the freshman pitcher of the year by the league coaches. Along with Kieschnick and Morgan, Tech returns All-America candidate Matt Smith at catcher, Willie Rueda (Honorable Mention All-Big 12 Coaches in 2005) at second base, shortstop Kyle Martin, infielder Jason Seefeld, and outfielders Drew Evans and James Leverton. On the mound, the Red Raiders return Colt Hynes who was the Saturday starter for most the season, Aaron Odom (LHP), AJ Ramos (RHP), Brian Cloud (RHP) and Cory Large (LHP).
A total of 24 newcomers (both scholarship players and walk-ons) will compete during fall practice for a spot on the official spring roster that will be announced in January.
Tech will hold a total of 15 scrimmages during the fall period and will take days off each Wednesday and Sunday unless inclement weather dictates a change to the schedule. All practices are open to the public and will generally start at 2:15 on weekdays.
