Tech Women Cruise to Easy Win; Men Finish Third

ORONO, Maine - The Texas Tech cross country teams will return home from Maine after a first- and third-place performance for the women and men, respectively, at the Murray Keatinge Invitational. The top placing for the women marks their second of the season, as they finished first at the Red Raider Jackrabbit Open. The men's placing is their second top-three finish in as many meets.
Seven of the eight women competing for Tech finished in the top 20, with Sally Kipyego leading the way for the second-straight competition. Kipyego took first place in the 5k race with a time of 16:11.82. Irene Kimaiyo tailed Kipyego to finish second with a clocking of 16:51.05. Violet Chemakwila and Gladys Kipsang each finished in the top 10. Chemakwila took fourth with a time of 17:16.67, while Kipsang ended in seventh running 17:37.57.
Taking first for the men was Kevin Chelimo with a run of 24:13.53 in the 4.97 mile race. Silas Kemboi ran the second top-10 finish of his career, placing ninth with a time of 24:59.20. Edwin Sang was the final Red Raider on the men's side to place in the top 20, taking 19th with a clocking of 25:26.90.
The women's squad finished 67 points ahead of second-place New Hampshire. On the men's side, Dartmouth took the team title with 40 points, with New Hampshire taking second with 67 and Tech finishing with 91 points.
The Red Raider teams will compete in their final meet before the conference championships when they travel to Fayetteville, Ark., for the Chile Pepper Invitational. The meet is set for Oct. 14, 2006. For complete coverage of the Texas Tech cross country teams, please visit www.texastech.com.
