LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech soccer fell to the UTEP Miners on Friday night in double overtime at R.P. Fuller Stadium. The Miners defeated the Red Raiders, 1-0.
The Red Raider collected five shots and the Miners tallied eight shots in a hard-fought first half, but neither team was able to tally the opening goal, sending the game to halftime scoreless. Sophomore goalkeeper Tina Rincon was very active in the period as she collected four saves. Rincon finished the game with nine saves and UTEP's goalkeeper Brittany Popoff finished with three saves.
Shortly into the second period the match was delayed due to lightning. When the match got underway again both teams struggled to score a goal. The Red Raiders and Miners each tallied eight shots in the period. With 18 seconds remaining in the match Tech shot an apparent goal, but an offside offense was called sending the game into overtime.
In double overtime, UTEP's Brandi Aston was able to tally a goal in the 107th minute giving UTEP the victory. The Miners improve to 7-1 on the season.
"I am sad for the players as I feel we were good enough to win this game," said head coach Neil McGuire. "They played with tremendous resolve. Both teams created real chances to win. I am interested to see the video tape replay on the goal the referee disallowed that would have won us the game with 18 seconds left. I have a different view than he does. I do think the players should take heart from the fact that we played very well against a second round NCAA tournament team. We will learn to win these games. I am proud of my girls."
The Red Raiders (3-4) will face Northwestern State at 1 p.m. CDT on Sun., Sept. 17. The theme for Sunday afternoon is Feed the Fan. The first 150 fans through the game will receive a coupon redeemable for a free Schlotzsky's sandwich at the concession stand.
Tech will open up conference play on Fri., Sept. 22, when they host the Texas Longhorns at 7 p.m. The Red Raiders will continue Big 12 action on Sun., Sept. 24, when they host the Aggies. The match against Texas A&M is slated for 1 p.m.
