LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech will be hosting its only home cross country event, the Red Raider Jackrabbit Open, on Friday, September 15th. The meet will take place at the intramural soccer fields with the women's race set for 6:30 p.m. followed by the men's at 7:00 p.m. The event is set to take place at the Texas Tech intramural soccer fields.
The Tech women's squad has already competed in one race this fall, the Mike Boit Invitational, finishing in second place. The Red Raiders were led by freshman Gladys Kipsang who ran a time of 18:05 to take second place. Kipsang's performance earned her Big 12 women's runner of the week for the first week of competition. The honor was the first for a Red Raider since Haron Lagat was recognized in October 2004.
The race will feature most of the Red Raiders, with many newcomers getting their first collegiate action. The top Tech finishers from last year's NCAA Championships, seniors Kevin Chelimo and Violet Chemakwila, will also be appearing in their first race of the season.
Competing against Tech this Friday will be Wayland Baptist, who took the top spot at the Mike Boit Invitational. Also taking part in the Jackrabbit Open will be Eastern New Mexico, Midwestern State, Lubbock Christian, South Plains College, New Mexico J.C., West Texas A&M and College of the Southwest.
