LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech sophomore outfielder Roger Kieschnick and his Team USA teammates wrapped up the gold medal yesterday evening at the FISU World Championships in Havana, Cuba, with an 18-9 win over Chinese Taipei.
The win by Team USA gives the United States' back-to-back championships at the FISU (International University Sports Federation) and marks the first-ever tournament win for USA Baseball in Cuba.
Team USA (comprised of the top collegiate talent from across the country) finished with a record of 28-2-1 this summer and marks the highest winning percentage (.919) by a USA Baseball collegiate team. This year's national team was bolstered by Tech sophomore Roger Kieschnick who finished the summer with a .290 average and was the fifth leading hitter on the wood bat team. Kieschnick added 14 RBI, one home run, one triple and four doubles in 27 games played.
Kieshnick, the Big 12's Freshman of the Year in 2005, will return home to the United States today and will be back on campus in the next two weeks. The Red Raiders are scheduled to begin fall practice on Monday, Sept. 4.
