OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - Baylor scored four unearned runs in the top of the sixth inning and held on for a 5-3 win over Texas Tech in the third round of the 2006 Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship in front of 4,300 fans at Bricktown Ballpark.
The loss wraps up the 2006 season for the Red Raiders (31-26-1) and unfortunately they end it on a six-game losing skid. The six-game losing skid is the longest by Texas Tech since 1992 when the Red Raiders lost six-straight between Jan. 31 and Feb. 9.
Baylor took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning on an RBI single by Kevin Russo. Russo's single scored Beamer Weems who led off the frame with a walk and moved over to second on a sacrifice bunt by Ben Booker.
Texas Tech came firing back in the bottom half of the third on the bat of Kyle Martin who laced his eighth home run of the season to tie the game at 1-1.
A costly fielding error by Martin in the top of the sixth, led to four unearned runs by Baylor as the Bears took a 5-1 lead. Chase Gerdes got Baylor rolling with an RBI single and Beamer Weems pushed the game out of reach with a three-run homer to the Tech bullpen in left-center field.
Texas Tech managed to plate a pair of runs in the sixth and seventh innings, but a double play by Martin with two runners on and no outs in the seventh quieted Tech's hope of a comeback. Martin and pinch hitter Trey Stewart got on board in the bottom of the ninth with a pair of singles but Baylor went to its bullpen and retrieved Nick Cassavechia who ended the Tech rally. The save was the eighth of the season for Cassavechia.
Colt Hynes (5-3) suffered the loss for Texas Tech after giving up five runs on six hits over 5 2/3 innings of work. Cory VanAllen (7-5) picked up the win for Baylor by tossing six solid innings allowing three runs on seven hits and struckout two.
