LUBBOCK, Texas - Former Red Raider and Los Angeles Avengers rookie quarterback Sonny Cumbie was chosen the most surprising player, as voted on by members of the Arena Football League Writers Association (AFLWA).
In his first season in the AFL, Cumbie has passed for 1,164 yards and 20 touchdowns with three interceptions in four starts, and has led the Avengers (3-5) to back-to-back victories.
During his one year as the starting signal caller at Texas Tech, Cumbie passed for 4,742 yards and 32 touchdowns while leading the Red Raiders to an 8-4 campaign, including a 45-31 win over then-No. 4 California in the 2004 Pacific Life Holiday Bowl in San Diego.
Cumbie and the Avengers play next at the Las Vegas Gladiators on April 2.
