
Tech Earns First Conference Sweep With Win Over Aggies

LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech Red Raiders defeated in-state rival Texas A&M by a 3-0 score in the United Spirit Arena Saturday night. The victory earned the Red Raiders a sweep of the series on the season, marking the first time Tech has won the home-and-away since 1992. Tech took the victory by scores of 30-25, 30-23, 30-27 to sweep their first conference opponent of the season. The Red Raiders now move ahead of the Aggies in Big 12 standings as Tech is now 5-13 while A&M is 4-15.
Despite both teams hitting low percentages, the Red Raiders out-hit the Aggies slightly, .190 to .131. Tech hit 51 kills with 27 errors on 126 attempts, while A&M had 39 kills and 23 errors on 122 attempts.
In the first game, Tech led until A&M crept back to tie at 10-all and take their first lead at 12-11. The frame then had multiple ties with 11 and five lead changes. With a tie at 19-19, Tech took control by going on a 4-1 run before an Aggie timeout. Out of the break, the Red and Black went on a 4-2 run before calling a timeout of their own at 27-22. The Red Raiders ended up winning the first game 30-25.
Texas Tech jumped to an early 7-0 lead before the Aggies went on a 10-3 run to tie the frame. At a 15-all tie, Tech pulled away with a four-point run and eventually got up by five at 23-18 before an Aggie timeout. Texas A&M responded with three unanswered points and forced the Red Raiders to call a timeout. Tech then went on a 7-2 run to put the second game away with a score of 30-23.
In the third frame, after a 4-3 Tech lead, the Aggies answered with a six-point run to take the lead at 9-4. While A&M led much of the game, being up by as much as six on three occasions, the Red Raiders rallied their way back into the frame to an eventual tie at 22. With back and forth points, the Red Raiders broke away with a four-point run to end the game and match with a 30-27 game three.
Philister Sang led all Red Raiders in kills with 24 on .391 hitting. Both Holly Hicks and Emily Ziegler tallied 22 assists. Freshman Jenn Harrell recorded 14 digs on the night to lead the Red Raiders, while Kiley Lyons added 11. Amy Charlebois knocked down six blocks on the night with two solo and four assisted.
The Red Raiders next face the Kansas State Wildcats on Wednesday for Senior Night in the United Spirit Arena. The first serve is set for 7 p.m. The final match of the season will be next Saturday at Missouri. For complete coverage, please visit www.texastech.com.
